In
a unique manner, Glen Ellen Winery helped revolutionize the wine industry and
played a major role in setting the stage for the wine boom enjoyed today.
Founded in 1980
in the Sonoma County village of Glen Ellen, the winery’s initial goal was to
create quality varietal wines in the hand-crafted boutique style. At that time,
the majority of the wine buying public was still accustomed to purchasing low
priced generic table wines. The winemakers at Glen Ellen decided the time was
right to introduce consumers to high quality varietal wines they could enjoy
drinking anytime, or anywhere, without worrying about esoteric, stuffy
“rules” associated with wine snobbery. Delicious taste would be the
criteria. The result: Consumers migrated away from generic wines and flocked to
Glen Ellen as they discovered the pleasures of drinking Chardonnay and Cabernet
Sauvignon by name—and seeking those varietals when they shopped. The little
winery grew rapidly to give its customers what they enthusiastically requested.
As
a result, Glen Ellen changed the way consumers made buying decisions, and the
rest of the wine industry soon followed. Glen Ellen educated consumers to become
varietal-conscious ambassadors for the Glen Ellen brand. They taught their
friends and family members to savor wine as a natural part of enjoying life’s
relaxed moments with food, family and friends—perfect for both special
occasions and everyday meals.
While
other wineries in California have a longer history or more celebrated owners,
Glen Ellen has always put the wine first. Thus, Glen Ellen became one of the
biggest wine brands in the country.
Today,
there is a “new” Glen Ellen which consumers will enjoy rediscovering.
Building on its traditions of innovation and quality, the familiar name
is now synonymous with even greater drinking pleasure and outstanding value.
A
nationwide taste test established consumers preferred Glen Ellen wines to those
of competitors costing much more. A handsome new package design enhances and
reinforces the quality image of Glen Ellen.
With a complete family of varietal wines, including Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, White Zinfandel and Sauvignon Blanc, the “new” Glen Ellen is poised to become the premium brand more people reach for in the 21st Century.
