Just five miles from the
Pacific Ocean, Edna Valley Vineyard has one of the longest and coolest growing seasons in
California. Its location in one of the state's few east/west-oriented valleys allows
nighttime coastal fog to move inland, cooling the grapes after a long day in the sunlight,
so that they slowly mature while retaining sufficient acidity. The vineyard's unique site
consists of layers of clay and volcanic rock over ancient ocean subsoil.
Edna Valley Vineyard is a partnership between Paragon Vineyard Company, owned by the Niven
family, and the Chalone Wine Group. The Niven family planted Paragon, our estate vineyard,
in the early 1970s and the two companies established a partnership as Edna Valley Vineyard
in 1980.
At the heart of our winemaking
is the idea that wine should be as pure an expression of the place and the grape as
possible. We handle the fruit gently and treat the wine with respect, minimizing pumping,
fining, and filtration. Our wines are aged mainly in French oak barrels selected for their
complementary qualities. In short, we use an artisan's approach to New World winemaking.
We focus on estate-grown Chardonnay and we have a strong commitment to producing Pinot
Noir and Syrah using new varietal clones. We also craft a variety of limited production
wines that are sold exclusively in our tasting room. Edna Valley Vineyard wines are
available nationally and internationally.
Edna Valley Vineyard is open to visitors year round for wine tasting, tours and special
events. Our Jack Niven Hospitality Center is consistently rated Best Tasting Room in
San Luis Obispo by locals in an annual newspaper poll.
Here you can sample our fine
wines and enjoy the beautiful views of the surrounding Paragon vineyard and volcanic
peaks. You can also see the winemaking process in action during a tour that is designed to
highlight the activities that are going on at the winery at that moment. Tours are given
weekends from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., on the hour.
Join our Club Edna wine club and become one of our extended family wine consumers with
hosted events, special pricing on all wines and merchandise. Club members receive access
to wines not sold outside of the winery, a member newsletter that provides advance notice
of upcoming events and special offerings, plus recipes developed to compliment our wines.
